Telekom Slovenije Is the Only Operator in Slovenia with the Latest Mobile Technology eSIM

28. 1. 2019

Telekom Slovenije is the only operator in Slovenia now offering its users the latest eSIM technology in the devices that meet the applicable GSMA standards. eSIM is a chip, i.e. a virtual SIM card that is permanently installed in a mobile device, and replaces the traditional SIM card in its familiar physical format.

The eSIM is a milestone in the development of mobile networks, allowing us to connect devices where using a regular SIM card is not possible, such a smart watches, IoT devices, home appliances, etc, to the mobile network.

Devices supporting the eSIM technology that are currently available from Telekom Slovenije include 2 Samsung’s smart watches, 3 Apple iPhones, and two Apple iPad Pro tablets:
- Samsung Galaxy Watch 42mm LTE and the Samsung Galaxy Watch
46mm LTE,
- Apple iPhone XS, Apple iPhone XR and Apple iPhone XS Max,
- Apple iPad Pro 11 256GB (2018) Cellular and Apple iPad Pro 12.9
256GB (2018) Cellular

Users can request to replace their existing SIM card with an eSIM at Telekom Slovenije’s point of sale, where they will receive a QR code to install it. eSIM shall be installed on the mobile device after the user scans the QR code with their device (the device must be connected to the mobile or wireless network), and if they want to use the eSIM on a devices that does not support scanning a QR code (e.g. a smart watch), they must first pair their device with a mobile phone, and use the phone to scan the QR code. After the eSIM is successfully transferred, the user can activate it, and the device will connect to Telekom Slovenije’s network.

When switching from the SIM card to an eSIM, the SIM card will be deactivated as soon as the eSIM is activated in the system. Switching to an eSIM costs €2.95, and for new subscriptions, the eSIM activation is already included in the connection fee. When a user deletes the eSIM from their device, this is the same as destroying a regular SIM card.

The eSIM is one of the milestones in the development of mobile networks, which will accelerate the development of the Internet of Things.
