Kontron and Telekom Slovenije launch the first commercial standalone private 5G network in Slovenia

6. 2. 2025

Kontron has, in cooperation with Telekom Slovenije, provided Cinkarna Celje with a private 5G mobile network solution, ensuring advanced wireless connectivity at its Celje manufacturing location, including seven warehouses.

This paves the way for the digitalisation of warehouse operations with portable mobile terminals. It is the first network in the region based on standalone (SA) 5G technology, which introduces the use of new applications, services and solutions for digitalising business operations.

Kontron's comprehensive solution provides the software and hardware for implementing the 5G SA core network, while Telekom Slovenije provides powerful, reliable and secure connectivity via its 5G radio access network (RAN).

"Our 5G private mobile network solution, which is the result of Slovenian research and development, provides robust and secure coverage across factory premises and warehouses, and is designed for industrial use, providing features for easy network and device management. It enables seamless mobility for people, assets and goods, increases productivity and efficiency, while prioritising security, reliability and cost optimisation, with support for various applications," said Janez Öri, Executive Director of Communication Solutions at Kontron.

Cinkarna Celje, which employs approximately 720 people, will utilise the private 5G mobile network in phase one to organise and digitalise warehouse operations and operations in general. Kontron's solution makes it possible to track materials in warehouses with barcode readers and sensor integration with direct connectivity to the 5G network. In the future, they will also use the private mobile network as a platform for digitalising other segments of operations.

"With the implementation of the first commercial 5G network in Slovenia, we have taken an important step forward in the digital transformation of our company. The network allows us to transfer data faster and more reliably, which is key for improving efficiency and productivity. Low latency will enable the use of advanced technologies such as automation and remote operations, which will contribute towards improved safety and reliability of our services. We see a wide use of the 5G network in various industrial scenarios, including warehouse automation, and improving the mobility and connectivity of our employees," explained Aleš Skok, President of the Management Board of Cinkarna Celje.

“Our 5G network at Cinkarna Celje allows us to provide a powerful and reliable private mobile network, tailored to the needs of the industrial environment. We have achieved optimum coverage of production facilities, warehouses, and outdoor areas with dedicated base stations, allowing for stable, responsive, and secure data transmission even with a large number of connected devices. This ensures conditions for real-time applications and smooth operation of key processes," said Kristijan Melinc, Head of Advanced Digital Solutions at Telekom Slovenije, adding: “Utilising state-of-the-art radio technologies makes it possible to provide high data rates, low latency, and secure and reliable connectivity. This makes the private 5G network an important foundation for the digital transformation of Cinkarna Celje and the transition to the smart factory of the future."

Kontron's stand-alone 5G core network for businesses is a next-generation solution, offering secure and reliable 5G connectivity. “The solution, which we have been developing in Kranj since 2020, is optimised for implementation in various industrial environments, ensures exceptionally fast time-to-service, allows for advanced and intelligent management, while at the same time also strictly protects sensitive data," summarised Janez Öri.

Reliable and secure device connectivity will also be leveraged for Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) solutions, such as autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs) and sensors designed to carry out monitoring and control processes.
